Tōsō Chain Drop Earring I

Tōsō — a vessel. Something that carries, suspends, delivers. In the decorative language of Chinese and Japanese woodblock prints, the hanging pendant — weighted, deliberate, swaying with movement — appears as both ornament and offering. Something precious held at a distance from the body, presented rather than worn. The chain descends simply, link by link, until it reaches the setting — a sculpted frame that cradles a 1.38 carat Paraiba tourmaline. The stone is pear-cut, luminous, carrying the particular blue-green that belongs to Paraiba alone — electric, almost internal, as though the light originates from within rather than reflecting from without.
